The Cantabric sea is a litoral sea from the Atlantic Ocean that, in his most oriental area, bathes the Biscay coast. It receives the name of Biscay Gulf close to the Basque Country coasts. The rivers flowing into this gulf are short and with a very irregular flows. One of the most known rivers is Nervion, which forms an estuary called Ría de Bilbao.
The Biscay Gulf has been an area of naval transit since ever. Its shape and location have strengthened its use for the navigation between the continental occidental coast and the north, and between those points and the British islands.
It is a transition sea between the cold seas of the north and the warm ones from the tropic. This makes it a natural transition area between these two ecosystems, with natural species from the two of them making it a very rich biological area. As an example, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
The strong NW winds over the Cantabric sea are originated by the low pressures in the British Islands and the North sea combined with the Azores anticyclone. The distance run by the wind and its constant direction and speed generate waves from 2,5 and 3 metres, originating a very rough sea. In very particular conditions, during april-may and september–october, the W winds can be so strong that can generate waves of 9 metres.
Now is our time to work for promoted the importance of this port and to show in the world our land and his virtues. This it is our aim and what we want to obtain with this project.
